Donna Shaw's Fertility Manifesto

At the end of the day... family is everything. I didn't meet my husband until I was 41 and he was 45, we met at a spiritual workshop. He told me the second day I knew him that he "was going to make babies (with me)" we just clicked. It's crazy, I often say that if we met when we were younger we would have had five kids! This is the life that happened to us and we are super grateful for how it played out. We are so blessed. John is a super brilliant life coach and executive coach. We are on a true personal growth trajectory. We lovingly challenge each other and Paloma and our 5 year old Maltese puppy Daphne are our greatest teachers!

My Fertility Coaching Manifesto:

I believe that if the desire to be a Mother is within you - then you should be a Mother. I believe in getting out of the body’s way and letting it do what it was created to do. I believe in getting to the root cause of any physical challenge not simply throwing meds at it, because you are not a number. I believe that your body has a unique story- a delicate and intricate one that needs attention, love and understanding. I will play detective- I will do my best to figure things out and I will support you as best I can to be the Mom you want to be. If that means sending you to the best doctor in town for very specific tests so be it. I will look into everything I can, your home environment and the products you use to clean house. I will ask you about your beauty routine and see what is helping your fertility and what could be getting in your way. Together we will get to the bottom of the issue. I believe in de-stressing with yoga and meditation. I believe in visualization. I believe in the power of God and I believe in the power of love. I know that sometimes your job, hectic schedule and fear could be getting in the way of you being a Mom. I know the benefit of a wonderful nights sleep. I know that having harmony in your romantic relationship is vitally important. I have learned from experience that ovulation predictors don't always work - that some women have such a short surge that a predictor won't pick it up - if this or any other simple thing is what has prevented you from being a mother - we can fix it quickly. There are simple solutions... some women need to go for daily monitoring/ blood work, I will support you around ovulation and get you to the right people for monitoring. I know that as we age not every egg is a good one and that's OK... you DO have a good one! I believe that you do! And even if you don't, you can still be a Mom. I will ask questions most won’t ask and I will ask them with deep love and deep knowing that you can be a Mom. I believe that working in a joyous way - in your right livelihood is one way to create an environment where a baby wants to be. I understand that sometimes further intervention is helpful and I will lovingly support you as needed and turn you on to some of the kindest and skilled experts on the planet. I believe in eating food that nourishes you. I feel strongly about getting your body ready for a baby before you even try to conceive. I have seen first hand how wonderfully the right herbs and supplements work. I will shake my head when I hear statistics knowing that miracles happen every day. I will encourage you to surround yourself with people who say “YES” to your body and to know when to walk away from those who say “NO”. I will tell you flat out that this baby making thing is a marathon, not a sprint - it can happen super fast or take longer than a year and I will show up for you as best I can as long as you do the same for yourself. I won’t give up on you. I won’t give up on the baby that is waiting to come through you.

I started coloring my hair in the early 90's (big chunky  Anne Bancroft in the Graduate highlights) and continued  (mostly to cover gray) until October 2016. Even though I had segued to healthier health food store dye - I knew it was not good for me. while pregnant and breastfeeding  I used henna and indigo (a 4 hour-hugely messy process!) I finally decided to 'ditch the dye' when my sister in law told me I could "totally do it". I was amazed at what was underneath all of that color - gorgeous white/gun metal gray and light silvers. Getting older isn't for sissies. Choosing (for now) to forgo injectables in favor of handstands (my yoga friends say it 'keeps the skin from sagging'). I have picked some more aggressive skincare (not so easy for a holistic gal) but, hey, the late forties / early 50's bloggers told me its time to "take out the big guns" so retinals and glycolics now clutter my vanity. Being OK with adding spanx to my wardrobe has been humbling to say the least, but Kathie Lee, Hoda and Jenna Bush Hager are all very vocal about the wonders of them, so here I go. Just like that I kissed ripples and bulges good bye! Just wait till you have a baby over forty! Oh, lord, you are in for the best personal growth of your life- sure I lost all of my baby weight (without much thought, mostly because of breastfeeding) all 40 pounds of it (yay me!) but quickly gained 10 of it back once she left my breast and started getting up multiple times a night (We haven't slept properly in years). It's all new and we are learning new things everyday. Needless to say I have picked up a few tricks and I am excited to share them with you all.

Fun facts...

Donna had so much trouble meeting someone she actually went on VH1's Tough Love (New Orleans) to "get some help" only to find that it just wasn't time to meet her guy yet, mostly because he wasn't ready to meet her until they both were ready and found each other in a workshop. Donna was also a finalist on Food Network Star, Season 10.
